This recipe is for the easiest Dutch Baby ever. Seriously.

I have 8th grade Home Economics to thank for introducing me. I've made a couple small changes over the years, but the basic recipe is still the same. I guess it's safe to say I've been making it for a long time!!😉

I posted some photos of this recipe on my Instagram stories a few weeks ago and had a resounding response of people asking for the recipe. I hope you enjoy this easy and delicious treat!

    WHAT IS A DUTCH BABY?

Think of a Dutch Baby (sometimes called a German pancake) as a hybrid of a pancake, a crepe and popover. It's a simple batter of flour, sugar, eggs and milk; baked in a hot pan with melted butter. The Dutch Baby puffs up like a popover or soufflé while it bakes and quickly deflates once removed from the oven. You are left with a soft and tender pancake with a unique shape.

WHY IS THIS THE EASIEST DUTCH BABY EVER?

This recipe requires no special tools. A mixing bowl, whisk and baking pan are all you need. A few kitchen staples for ingredients and you are good to go. This recipe is on repeat in my kitchen and gets made on average 2-3 times a week.

The prep time is at most 5 minutes and the Dutch Babies, as I most often call them, are baked in 15 minutes. Perfect for busy mornings!

HOW TO MAKE A DUTCH BABY

First, pre-heat your oven and place the butter in a 9x9 baking pan or 9-inch round baking pan.

baking pan with butter in it

    Then whisk together the flour and granulated sugar. Add in the eggs and milk and whisk until mostly smooth. A few remaining small lumps are okay. Add a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg and whisk to combine. {You can use only one of the two spices, both or neither ~ it turns out great with any of those options. A splash of vanilla is also nice.}

    • bowl with batter and a whisk
    • bowl with batter showing cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled on top

Next, add the baking pan with butter to the oven and let the pan heat up and melt the butter. This step only takes a couple of minutes. Watch carefully so you don't burn the butter!

Once the butter has melted, carefully remove the hot pan from the oven and swirl the butter to make sure the entire pan has been coated with the melted butter. Add the batter on top of the butter and place the pan back in the oven.

Bake for 15 minutes, until the Dutch Baby has puffed up and is lightly browned on the edges.

Puffed Dutch Baby fresh from the oven

The Dutch Baby will deflate quickly once removed from the oven. Top with powdered sugar and serve. You can also top with fresh fruit, jam, maple syrup or lemon curd; there are no limits!

There you have it. Easiest impressive breakfast ever and picky child approved!

I highly recommend using weight (metric) measurements when available for more accuracy and the best results.

    Please note

When using 2x or 3x ingredients, the grams DO NOT adjust, you will have to manually do that.

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup all-purpose flour 63g
    • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar 12g
    • 2 large eggs
    • ½ cup milk 118mL
    • 2 Tablespoons butter 28g
    • Pinch of ground cinnamon*
    • Pinch of ground nutmeg*
    • 1-2 Tablespoons confectioners' sugar for dusting on baked Dutch Baby

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400°F.
    • Place 2 Tablespoons of butter in a 9" round or 9x9 baking pan.
    • In a medium bowl whisk flour (½ cup/63g) and granulated sugar (1 tablespoon/12g).
    • Add eggs (2 large) and milk (½ cup/118mL) and whisk until mostly smooth, a few small lumps are fine.
    • Whisk in the cinnamon and nutmeg (pinch of each). Set the batter aside while the oven finishes preheating.
    • When the oven is close to preheated, place the prepared pan in the oven to allow the butter to melt (it only takes a couple of minutes). Watch carefully to not burn the butter! Remove the hot pan and swirl the melted butter to coat the bottom and sides of the pan.
    • Pour the batter on top of the melted butter and bake for 15 minutes or until edges are lightly browning and the batter has puffed up. Do not open the oven during the baking process!
    • Dust the top of the baked Dutch baby with confectioners' sugar. The Dutch baby will deflate quickly upon removal from the oven. Cut and serve.

    Notes

You can use either just cinnamon or just nutmeg or eliminate the spices all together. Personally, I love the flavor that they both add! You can also use a splash of pure vanilla extract.
Can be topped with confectioners' sugar, fresh berries, jam, maple syrup or lemon curd. Also delicious plain!
Any leftovers can be wrapped tightly and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Re-warm as desired.
